Cyclone Chido : Northeast and Northwest Coasts of Madagascar on Alert

DIANA region and Vohémar district on red alert

As expected, on Friday afternoon, Cyclone Chido moved north of the northern tip of Madagascar, still in an intense tropical cyclone state.

Intense tropical cyclone (CTI) Chido has crossed the Diana region and the Vohémar district, triggering a red alert for the entire region. It is located 107 km from Cape Bobaomby. According to Météo Madagascar, CTI Chido is accompanied by strong winds of 175 km/h and gusts of 245 km/h. The northeast and northwest coasts of Madagascar are facing strong surges, violent winds, and intense swells. Chido continues to move in a southwesterly direction at 22 km/h.

Chido, the third system of this 2024-2025 cyclone season in the southwestern Indian Ocean basin, is directly targeting the neighboring islands, west of Madagascar. The Comoros and Mayotte are in its path. The cyclone was expected to pass closest to the Comoros this weekend, still at the CTI stage.

The red alert was triggered for December 14. Until tonight, between Cape Angotsy and Bobaomby, and at least in the morning, between Cape Bobaomby and Mahajanga. Naturally, it is strongly advised against going out to sea. The area between Mahajanga and Cape Vilanandro is on yellow alert. Meteorologists in Madagascar are closely monitoring the behavior and evolution of CTI Chido in the Indian Ocean region and observing it in all weather stations around the world.
