Cyclone Chido : Aid Still Insufficient

Logistical Challenges Hamper Aid Distribution

The amount of assistance mobilized so far falls far short of addressing the enormous needs of the victims of Cyclone Chido. Calls for help are growing increasingly urgent.

A week after Cyclone Chido ravaged the island of Mayotte, dissatisfaction is mounting over the inadequate aid provided to the victims. Nearly all those affected by the tragedy view the response as insufficient. Exhausted victims are frustrated over the slow delivery and distribution of basic food supplies. Hundreds of pleas for help have flooded social media, highlighting urgent needs for water, food, and medicine.

While awaiting additional aid, residents have begun repairing their homes independently, as they lack access to dedicated shelters. Around 71 emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate those affected, but once again, these efforts fall short. Families are relying on each other for support, striving to regain some semblance of stability, yet many victims remain without a place to sleep.

Recent efforts to distribute aid in various towns have proven inadequate to meet the overwhelming demand. Media sources report logistical complications hindering the delivery of assistance in densely populated and severely affected areas.

Across the country, volunteers have stepped up to provide emergency relief to victims in Mayotte. In recent days, fundraising initiatives, distributions of water, food parcels, and medicine have been organized under the joint supervision of associations and the « Solidarité Chido » collective, which unites various civil society actors.
