Comoros will send aid to Mayotte

International organizations support the initiative

The SGTM (Société de Gestion de Transport Maritime) is being solicited by Comorian authorities to locate a ship capable of transporting up to 1,500 tons of goods. This ship will be used to transport provisions and a significant amount of drinking water to Mayotte.

Following Cyclone Chido, the government of Comoros is calling on the SGTM to quickly locate a ship capable of transporting humanitarian aid to Mayotte. International organizations specializing in humanitarian crises support this initiative. The goal is to distribute significant drinking water and food to the affected people.

The Comorian authorities are covering the cost of this operation. The government has created a dedicated account to collect funds to support these humanitarian initiatives. Cyclone Chido’s passage highlights the weaknesses of regional infrastructures in the face of climate disasters. According to the president of the national post-crisis management committee, locating a large ship is essential to ensure a constant transit of humanitarian aid.

This ship will not only help respond to the urgent needs of the affected people but also strengthen the Comorian preparedness for future crises, such as a cyclone expected in January 2025. This approach demonstrates the determination of Comorian officials to effectively orchestrate relief operations in collaboration with regional partners to address this emergency.
