Island Unity in the Face of Global Challenges
Antananarivo vibrated to the rhythm of regional diplomacy with the closing, on April 24, 2025, of the 5th Summit of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), chaired by the Comorian Head of State, Azali Assoumani.
The summit, held for the third time in the Malagasy capital, brought together heads of state, experts, and international partners around two major themes: the review of 40 years of regional cooperation and food security and sovereignty. Several initiatives were launched on this occasion, including a photo exhibition as part of the Horizon 2030 program and the book “IOC, an Island Adventure.”
Satisfied with the conclusions of the discussions, Azali Assoumani emphasized the importance of rigorously following up on the recommendations, emphasizing the need to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation. “We must transform our exchanges into concrete actions to build a more prosperous region,” he declared.
The President also called for the establishment of regional agricultural production zones to strengthen food sovereignty and boost intra-IOC trade. Regarding security, the Head of State reaffirmed the importance of strengthened cooperation against maritime trafficking.
As the Union of the Comoros takes over the presidency of the organization for the next twelve months, Azali Assoumani promises full commitment. He will soon submit a strategic document to improve regional coordination and calls for a common position at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice.
This summit ends on a note of hope, in a spirit of strengthened solidarity, reflecting an IOC focused on a sustainable and shared future.
