Acting together to address the food crisis in Madagascar
The AXIAN Foundation has donated 100,000 USD to combat malnutrition in southern Madagascar, a sum matched by the Child Nutrition Fund (CNF).
This funding will be used to purchase lifesaving therapeutic foods, such as Plumpy’Nut, which play a role in treating severe acute malnutrition in children. UNICEF Madagascar will purchase 3,000 cartons of these ready-to-use food products and will also provide medical monitoring, including medication and regular screenings.
The situation in southern Madagascar is particularly worrying. Less than 5% of children aged 6 to 23 months receive adequate nutrition. Approximately 86% of families lack access to nutritious food, a problem exacerbated by repeated droughts and biodiversity loss. As a result, 24% of children live in severe food poverty.
This initiative is supported by international partners such as Jeff Bezos and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is also part of preparations for the Nutrition for Growth 2025 Summit, scheduled to take place in Paris, where global commitments will be made to combat malnutrition.
Christine Jaulmes, representative of UNICEF Madagascar, highlighted the importance of this partnership with the AXIAN Foundation, which will enable the treatment of a greater number of children and improve their health.
