Project funded by the French embassy
Young members of the Mbwangoma cooperative in Mwali are currently receiving training in both traditional and modern sewing techniques. This initiative, funded by the French Embassy, aims to enhance their employability and reduce unemployment in the area.
Last Saturday, the Mbwangoma community gathered at the local public primary school to officially launch the program. The French Embassy has provided financial support of 43,000 EUR for this project, which targets members of the Mbwangoma seamstresses’ cooperative. The program, titled « Training Young People in Traditional and Modern Sewing to Facilitate Employment », will benefit 30 individuals from the Mwalimdjini commune.
This 15-month project focuses on equipping participants with skills in designing both traditional and contemporary clothing. The first six months will be dedicated to theoretical lessons, followed by practical tasks such as learning to use sewing machines to enhance their skills.
At the end of the training, a local enterprise will be established to support the young participants in producing traditional and modern garments. This initiative is especially timely given the limited number of sewing workshops in Mwali, a sector with significant growth potential.
