Promoting equality between men and women
Women constitute over half of Madagascar’s population and are increasingly pivotal in the nation’s economic development. They are being actively encouraged to engage with regional African markets.
Women are encouraged to engage in regional markets like Comesa, but they remain underrepresented despite their crucial role in Madagascar’s economic development. Many women face challenges in fully participating in various economic sectors.
In response, the government and private sector, in collaboration with Comesa members, have organized a workshop to create a national policy promoting gender equality. This initiative aims to enhance women’s participation in Africa’s regional markets, particularly Comesa.
Rova Rabetaliana, Director General of Population at the Ministry of Population and Solidarity, emphasizes that significant development is impossible if the majority of the population remains inactive. The new policy is designed to enable women to advance and contribute more effectively to Madagascar’s development.
Additionally, the Malagasy government has implemented measures to support women’s production and entrepreneurship, including the One District, One Factory project, which encourages their active participation.
