Enhancing port operations
In mid-October, the Seychelles Port Authority (SPA) introduced a new tugboat to strengthen its fleet. Acquired for 6.3 million USD, this tugboat boasts an ultramodern design and advanced Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) technology.
The tugboat is 21.02 meters long, has a draft of 4.5 meters, and a beam width of 10.81 meters. With a pulling force of 50 tons, it can reach a top speed of 12 knots. According to SPA, advanced technology and exceptional capabilities will enable the Seychelles to optimize port operations while ensuring maritime safety.
SPA’s Director General, Sonny Payet, emphasized that the tugboat is equipped with the latest technology for safe navigation, allowing SPA to respond effectively to emergencies, assist large vessels, and maintain waterway vitality. He noted, « The presence of this tugboat will undoubtedly strengthen our sea operations, support our local economy, and deepen the connection between our community and the sea ».
This addition aims to meet the demands of larger vessels expected to dock at Port Victoria once the ambitious Port Victoria rehabilitation and expansion project is complete. During the inauguration, SPA honored staff members who recently participated in two critical operations: one involved a fire on the artificial port island, and the other managed an oil leak from a grounded vessel near Sainte-Anne Island.
