USAID and UNDP fund support project for Malagasy customs

In its dedication to fostering sustainable development in Madagascar, UNDP is launching the Malagasy Customs Support Project.

This initiative, backed by USAID, aims to streamline the clearance process for exports and imports. This endeavor seeks to augment customs revenues through digitization and enhancing operational methods within the customs administration.

« More than half of Madagascar’s economy relies on the revenues collected by customs. The General Directorate of Malagasy Customs (DGD) has embarked on a comprehensive reform aimed at significantly enhancing its performance and its contribution to the national economy », elucidates Claire Pierangelo, the Ambassador of the United States of America to Madagascar and the Union of Comoros.

Natasha van Rijn, the UNDP Resident Representative in Madagascar, underscores the vital role of customs modernization in propelling Madagascar’s economic advancement. The project adheres to a robust governance framework, overseen by a steering committee for strategic guidance and a technical committee for operational supervision. Scheduled for two years, from November 2023 to November 2025, this program is executed by UNDP and financed by USAID with a sum of 1.25 million USD.
