Changes for Drivers
Every new year brings its share of new measures. Here is an overview of some changes in Mayotte since January 1, 2024.
As promised by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne in 2023, young people in Mayotte will be able to obtain their driving licenses and drive at the age of 17. The government hopes to facilitate the integration of young people into the job market. Moreover, any speeding infraction below 5 km/h will not lead to a license suspension but rather a fine
Retirement pension and unemployment insurance
Regarding the minimum wage (SMIC), it has been raised to EUR 8.80 gross per hour. For retirees, a 3.77 % contribution will be deducted from the gross amount of the pension starting from January 1, 2024. Furthermore, the mandatory contribution period to qualify for unemployment insurance has been reduced to 5 months. Lastly, the Center for University Education and Research (CUFR) in Mayotte is now named the University of Mayotte.
In the health sector
A solidarity health insurance plan has been established in Mayotte. This measure will benefit approximately 139,000 insured individuals for healthcare expenses not covered by health insurance. Pharmacists can also dispense certain medications individually in case of stock shortages.
