Mauritian Government Supports Star Knitwear Ltd Workers

A Career Future for Star Knitwear Ltd Alumni

On 1st March 2025, a job fair was held at Rabita Hall, Port Louis, in response to the downsizing at Star Knitwear Ltd.

The event brought together 48 companies, attracting 186 former employees of the company, looking for new career opportunities.

Organized by the Ministry of Labour and Industrial Relations, in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, SMEs and Cooperatives and the Mauritius Export Association, the event aimed to support laid-off and expatriate employees. Muhammad Reza Cassam Uteem, Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, highlighted the importance of this initiative for professional reintegration. He mentioned the registration of workers in the Workfare program, which guarantees them financial support for a period of one year, while waiting to find stable employment.

Employers in attendance had the opportunity to meet candidates directly. Several former employees of Star Knitwear Ltd were shortlisted for interviews. The ministry said it would closely monitor efforts to ensure that redundant workers have access to decent jobs. This event is a testament to the government’s efforts to address current economic challenges and provide redundant workers with the means to bounce back.
