Strengthening the economy and unlocking new opportunities
Women-led entrepreneurship is a key driver of development in Madagascar. To maximize their impact, women entrepreneurs are being strongly encouraged to join the formal sector an initiative aimed at strengthening the economy and creating new opportunities.
Operating in the informal sector poses risks to business growth. In Madagascar, women entrepreneurs play a vital role in the economy and transitioning to the formal sector is promoted to ensure the stability and expansion of their enterprises.
A partnership between the Economic Development Board of Madagascar (EDBM) and the French Development Agency (AFD) has been established to help micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) formalize. This initiative specifically targets women-led businesses in regions such as Analamanga, Vakinakaratra, Amoron’i Mania, and Haute Matsiatra. The program provides incentives and tailored guidance to ease the legal integration of these businesses. Its overarching goal is to support women-led enterprises and encourage their inclusion in the formal economy.
Nicolas Le Guen, AFD’s Director in Madagascar, emphasizes : « We believe in the potential of the private sector and all Malagasy economic entities to generate value and growth, thereby contributing to national progress ».
By fostering the development of women-led MSMEs within the formal sector, this initiative also enhances the business environment, a critical factor for attracting international investment. Supporting the recognition and formalization of women entrepreneurs enables Madagascar to move toward a more inclusive and resilient economy.
