Strengthening Support Services to Stimulate Growth
In Amoron’i Mania, the development of local crafts is hampered by a severe shortage of raw materials, particularly wood, as well as issues related to the distribution and export of its products.
The craft sector in Amoron’i Mania primarily faces a lack of raw materials, crucial for creating many artisanal items. Difficult supply leads to constant production challenges. This situation increases expenses and jeopardizes the sustainability of many small craft businesses. Although the craft industry contributes about 5% to Madagascar’s GDP, this sector remains underdeveloped due to these difficulties.
During her visit to Ambositra on January 4, Viviane Dewa, Minister of Tourism and Crafts, discussed these issues with artisans. They also expressed their problems related to export restrictions. In particular, weight limits imposed on travelers’ luggage restrict their chances of marketing their products in other markets. Besides the raw material deficit, inadequate infrastructure, heavy taxation, and inefficient distribution systems hinder the sector’s expansion.
To address these challenges, the Minister unveiled various initiatives to support artisans in the coming months. During these discussions, the Minister also proposed the idea of reducing taxes for small craft businesses and intensifying support services to stimulate their growth.
