Expansion of submarine fiber optic cable network
Mauritius’ national telecommunications company, Mauritius Telecom (MT), is embarking on an initiative to expand its operations across the African continent.
The Mauritian company is evaluating potential acquisitions as part of its strategic plan to diversify beyond the local market. MT is exploring opportunities in Seychelles, Madagascar, the Republic of Congo, and Ghana. While focusing on expanding through existing mobile operators, MT remains open to exploring other avenues beyond mobile communications.
« We possess the resources and capability to invest. With solid financial backing from reputable banks, we are confident in our ability to enter new markets and carve out specific niches », emphasizes the CEO of MT.
MT has invested 55 million USD (approximately 2.5 billion Rs) in a new submarine fiber optic cable network connecting Mauritius to the west coast of South Africa. The next phase involves extending the network to India and Singapore, with an estimated cost of 120 million USD (approximately 5.5 billion Rs), as disclosed by Kapil Reesaul. MT is currently discussing with Indian operators Orange SA and Cable & Wireless in Seychelles to facilitate this expansion.
