A key infrastructure project for the Malagasy economy
Madagascar is taking a new step in improving its infrastructure with the officialization of a joint investment between the government and mining giant Rio Tinto for the rehabilitation of the National Road 13 (RN13).
This agreement signed between the Malagasy authorities and Rio Tinto’s local subsidiary, QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM), marks a change for regional development. The State will allocate at least 12 million USD from QMM’s dividends to this project, while Rio Tinto will pay an additional USD 8 million. The work will be entrusted to the companies Colas and Top International, recognized for their expertise in the field of road infrastructure.
This initiative goes beyond the simple modernization of a road. The RN13, nicknamed « Lalan’ny Firaisankina » or « Road of Solidarity », is a key axis for the economic development of southern Madagascar. Its rehabilitation will facilitate trade and improve the mobility of residents. « Since its launch in June 2022, the RN13 has become a symbol of unity and progress », emphasizes Richard Théodore Rafidison, Minister of Public Works.
The project is also in line with the renewal of the QMM establishment agreement in August 2023, strengthening the partnership between the Big Island and Rio Tinto. The signing of this agreement brought together several senior officials, including Richard Théodore Rafidison, Minister of Public Works, Herindrainy Olivier Rakotomalala, Minister of Mines, as well as Isabelle Wabete, Executive Director of QMM. This collaboration illustrates the country’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive development, highlighting the mining sector which actively contributes to infrastructure and the well-being of local populations.
