Encouraging physical activity among youth
On World No Tobacco Day 2024, Dr. Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, Minister of Health and Wellness, encouraged young people to engage in physical activities and avoid the temptation of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs to promote a healthier society.
On Monday, June 3, 2024, the Minister spoke during the presentation of activities planned for World No Tobacco Day 2024. Notable attendees included Parliamentary Private Secretaries Gilbert Bablee and Soobeersingh Dhunnoo, National Assembly member Ashley Ittoo, and World Health Organization representative in Mauritius, Dr. Anne-Marie Ancia.
Addressing students, Dr. Jagutpal highlighted the harmful health effects of smoking, cautioning that tobacco use can lead to various health issues. He urged young people to resist the influence of the tobacco industry’s marketing strategies, which target youth to create a new wave of addiction and profit.
Furthermore, the Minister reiterated his commitment to protecting the youth and the population by implementing several measures to combat tobacco use. These measures include banning smoking in public places, reducing levels of nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke, and introducing plain packaging for cigarette packs.
