Prevention and protection against locust plagues
Since the campaign against locusts began in October 2023, 31,495 hectares have been treated: 2,150 hectares by air and 29,355 hectares by land.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Minae) provides precise information on the current state of locust control efforts. This mission of prevention and protection against locust plagues is resolutely undertaken by the ministry to guarantee the country’s food security.
Since July 6, 2024, Minae and the IFVM, in partnership with the Ministry of National Defense (MDN), have conducted an extensive campaign against destructive locusts. Financial support from the Program for the Development of Inclusive Agricultural Sectors (Defis) has been essential for this operation.
In the Menabe, Matsiatra Ambony, Amoron’i Mania, Ihorombe, and Atsimo-Andrefana regions, the army has used a helicopter to treat 2,150 hectares of infested land. Meanwhile, IFVM mobile teams have conducted intensive ground operations on 640 hectares using backpack and self-propelled sprayers in the Menabe, Ihorombe, and Atsimo-Andrefana regions.
However, Minae and the IFVM warn: « It is strictly forbidden to consume sprayed locusts due to the serious risk of food poisoning ». The population is advised to communicate this information widely to protect everyone’s health.
