Increased Vigilance Against HIV/AIDS

Raising awareness about the disease

The future of the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Indian Ocean region is being discussed at a high-level meeting at CCI Ivato.

Madagascar must increase its vigilance. There has been an exponential rise in HIV/AIDS cases. In 2023, it is estimated that around 75,000 individuals are living with HIV, while only 20,000 cases have been officially reported. This alarming gap highlights the magnitude of the challenge ahead. Many people are unaware they carry the virus and unknowingly continue to spread it through unprotected sexual activities or other risky behaviors.

People living with HIV/AIDS emphasize the need for screening resources in every locality. According to a study conducted from October 2023 to March 2024, « the demand for community testing services is increasing, but the available resources are insufficient ». Furthermore, in Madagascar, many individuals do not perceive themselves as affected, believing that HIV is not present and that knowing their serological status is a low priority for them.

In Madagascar, the number of people affected by the disease is rising due to drug addiction, unprotected sexual activities, and early sexual initiation among adolescents. It is crucial to foster open and honest discussions about sexuality and protection, whether at home, in schools, or among friends. It is not a matter of shame, but a necessity.
