Water and Power Cuts : Urgent Solutions Needed

Significant impact on the economy

The head of state will address the public to explain the causes of the water and electricity issues, but more importantly, to discuss the solutions. He stressed that, regarding Antananarivo, emergency measures will be implemented immediately.

Emergency measures will be put in place for Antananarivo to address the ongoing water and electricity supply issues, with a particular focus on the water sector. The occupant of Iavoloha mentioned increasing the number of water tankers as an urgent solution to the capital’s water shortage. These tankers will be deployed to supply water to disadvantaged water reservoirs in neighborhoods classified as red zones due to the shortage.

The President has announced the implementation of emergency solutions alongside immediate response mechanisms to tackle the water crisis. In addition to social repercussions, the power outages have had significant economic impacts. Large industries, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, are also struggling. The President of the Republic mentioned the contribution of the thermal power plants in Ambohimanambola, such as the TAC1 and TAC2 thermal combustion turbines, to offset the electricity production shortfall during this dry season.

The decision to use the TAC1 and TAC2 turbines to supplement the underperforming hydroelectric plants was taken during a meeting chaired by the President of the Republic. He was accompanied by the Minister of Energy, the Minister of Water, and the General Director of Jirama.
