Strategic Expansion of the Electric Grid in Madagascar

JIRAMA Receives Crane Trucks Funded by the World Bank

Thirteen crane trucks were delivered to JIRAMA on January 31, 2025, at Antanetibe Ilafy as part of the national electrical grid expansion project, supported by the World Bank.

JIRAMA, with over 600,000 electricity subscribers and 200,000 water customers, faces growing demand and significant challenges. Frequent power outages affect both households and businesses, highlighting the difficulties of Madagascar’s energy sector. Despite these challenges, the company continues to invest in expanding the grid, relying on already insufficient infrastructure.

JIRAMA’s CEO, Ron Weiss, sought to reassure stakeholders by emphasizing that the grid expansion will be accompanied by a significant increase in production. « We are strengthening our production capacity through hydroelectric and solar projects », he explained. Among these projects, the Ranomafana hydroelectric plant, launched in December 2024, produces 64 MW and helps reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Other renewable energy initiatives complement this strategy, such as the Ankorikahely solar park in Antsiranana, which has been generating 2.449 MW since August 2023, and the Ehoala solar plant in Taolagnaro, producing 8 MW. An ambitious project is also underway at Ivato, with the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant.

Despite these promising investments, implementation remains a major challenge. Expanding the grid without sufficient production could exacerbate power outages, a paradox that raises questions about the viability of JIRAMA’s strategy. Between ambition and technical constraints, the future of Madagascar’s energy sector hinges on a fragile balance.
