Increasing Solar Energy Production Capacity
At Iavoloha, President Rajoelina announced Madagascar’s goal to install 1,000 megawatts of solar panels nationwide, with the state’s funds financing the first 250 megawatts.
In his address, the President discussed pressing energy issues at the Governmental Experience Exchange Forum, organized with ministers and a delegation from the United Arab Emirates. He stated that the government plans to establish 1,000 megawatts of solar power plants across the country.
« Every development must rely on a robust and sustainable energy policy. We aim to double or even triple our energy production capacity. For households and industries alike, energy costs remain a significant concern. That’s why we are committed to accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power », stated the President.
While Madagascar has a hydroelectric potential of 7,800 megawatts, solar power is the primary driver for accelerating the energy transformation. Last year, the government allocated its own resources to launch a project establishing solar power plants with a total capacity of 50 megawatts, serving 47 districts. Part of the necessary installations arrived in May. Beyond the project’s cost, the solar power option allows for rapid implementation and offers users an affordable energy solution, which is a vital opportunity amid the ongoing energy crisis.
