Complete restoration of the Antananarivo electric network
The much-anticipated renovation of the electricity distribution network in Madagascar’s Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA) is on the verge of beginning. The final hurdle is the release of funds from Exim Bank China, which will greenlight the start of the project.
During a visit to Beijing, Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina met with the Tebian Electric Apparatus (TBEA Group) board of directors. Rajoelina confirmed the implementation of the « Medium Ring Tanà » project, a comprehensive initiative to completely reconstruct the RIA electricity network. The project, already approved by Madagascar’s Council of Ministers, is backed by a 177 million USD grant from the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA). The work will be carried out by the TBEA Group.
The only step left is for Exim Bank China to release the necessary funds. President Rajoelina’s presence in Beijing has helped accelerate the process, with the President urging TBEA leadership to move forward without delay, as the financing agreement has already been signed.
The « Medium Ring Tanà » project involves the complete overhaul of the RIA, including the construction of 185 kilometers of high-voltage lines capable of transmitting 90 kilovolts of electricity. In addition, eight new electricity distribution stations will be built. This initiative marks the first major renovation of Madagascar’s electric grid in 60 years.
Once completed, this project will enable Madagascar’s national utility, Jirama, to modernize its distribution network, offering reliable and sustainable electricity to the Malagasy people. The transition to a more efficient energy system will also reduce electricity generation costs, ultimately benefiting consumers with lower prices. Most importantly, the project promises to address the long-standing issue of power outages, improve the quality of life for citizens, and support the nation’s development.
