Promoting Electric Vehicles to Combat Pollution

Encouraging the population to change their consumption habits

The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD) presented various measures proposed to tackle pollution during the celebration of Pollution-Free Day in Anosy on Sunday.

One of the key strategies highlighted by the government is the transition to electric vehicles. The celebration featured demonstrations of electric cars and motorcycles. « The government has already approved the National Plan for Pollution Control », stated Max Andonirina Fontaine, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development. According to the Minister, there is also a tax exemption for electric cars and motorcycles, designed to encourage people to shift their consumption habits. Additionally, many dealers are already selling these electric vehicles and motorcycles.

On Sunday, the ministry signed a partnership agreement with Vmoto Madagascar, a newly established manufacturer and seller of electric motorcycles on the island. This partnership aims to promote green mobility solutions. Through this collaboration, the ministry seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote a transition to more environmentally friendly modes of transport on the island.

Alongside promoting eco-friendly mobility, the government also plans to intensify monitoring and enforcement against vehicles with high CO₂ emissions. In collaboration with the Land Transport Agency, the MEDD intends to strengthen inspections and impose stricter penalties for non-compliance.
