Significant measures implemented
Three weeks after the devastating passage of Cyclone Chido, rehabilitation efforts continue in Mayotte. A third of the residents are still experiencing blackouts.
Electricité de Mayotte (EDM), the electricity provider, provided an update on the situation in the archipelago on Saturday, January 4. The company reported that electricity has been restored to 69.7% of customers, meaning nearly a third of residents are still without power. According to EDM’s map, the electricity supply remains below 50% in 20 villages and communes, while in 8 areas, less than 5% of households have had their electricity restored.
During his visit to Mayotte at the end of December, Prime Minister François Bayrou called for the complete restoration of electricity in every home. To achieve this goal, 75 EDF employees continue to support EDM’s efforts. Of these, 48 are from Enedis, 17 from EDF SEI, and 10 from the Rapid Action Nuclear Force (FARN). EDF announced in a statement that they anticipate the arrival of new reinforcements. With the arrival of 32 new agents from the FIRE this weekend, the total number of Enedis employees on site has reached 80.
The collective has also deployed 200 tons of network equipment (cables, repair kits, tools, etc.), 60 vehicles (including 11 cranes), and 220 generators (including 20 high-power ones). These are shipped daily from Paris. This week, EDF chartered a cargo plane to transport 100 tons of equipment.
