Inauguration of a new solar power plant in the Comoros

Towards 45% Renewable Energy by 2030

On April 19, 2025, the Comoros took a major step toward its energy transition with the inauguration of the Kwambani ya Washili solar power plant.

This project aims to contribute to the country’s ambition to achieve more than 45% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030. Located on a 50,000 m² site, the solar power plant is equipped with 10,560 solar panels. With a capacity of 6.3 megawatts-peak, the plant produces approximately 10 gigawatt-hours per year. This energy is distributed to several localities, including Shomoni, Vwadju, and Moroni, via a 17 km power line. Funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), this project was completed in less than 11 months by the Lebanese company Ecosys.

At the inauguration, Hady Younes, Ecosys representative in the Comoros, encouraged the population to use this new source of green energy. “It’s for your own good, use it especially during the day,” he explained. The official also mentioned that this project is the beginning of other similar initiatives on the islands of Ndzuani and Mwali.

President Azali Assoumani, present at the ceremony, thanked the United Arab Emirates for its support and announced a donation of 4 billion Comorian francs (approximately USD 880,000) to improve the water and electricity sectors.

Alongside the plant’s inauguration, two other projects are being launched: a water supply network, supported by the UNDP, and a road section between Bahani and Shezani. Energy Minister Aboubacar Said Anli emphasized the importance of this project in ending energy poverty in the country. He also thanked the residents of Washili for donating the land on which the plant is being built.
