Modernization of the Network for Tomorrow
The Malagasy government is accelerating the energy transition. During the Council of Ministers meeting on February 5, 2025, several strategic projects were approved. The goal is to strengthen access to electricity and modernize the national energy grid.
The Council of Ministers approved the implementation of the « Tana Medium Ring » project. This program aims to increase access to electricity and strengthen the Interconnected Network of Antananarivo. Specifically, 193 km of 90 kV electrical lines will be built. Additionally, eight substations will be installed in Antsipolitra, Antsirabe I, Antanifotsy, Behenjy, Tana Sud II, Ambohijanaka, Tana Ouest II, and Imerintsiatosika.
This project was discussed at the FOCAC in China in September 2024 and has undergone a comprehensive study. As a result, President Andry Rajoelina has ordered its rapid deployment. Furthermore, the government has also approved the progress of solar power plant projects of 50 MW and 250 MW. The aim is to double renewable energy production and achieve an electrification rate of 75% by 2030. Several infrastructures are under construction, including a 100 MW plant in Tsarasaotra to strengthen the capital’s power supply.
Additional 30 MW installations will be set up in Nosy Be, Antsiranana, and Toliara. Moreover, studies are ongoing for sites in Mahajanga, Toamasina, and Fianarantsoa. The land is being selected based on specific technical criteria. Finally, the fencing of the sites will begin before the installation of the solar panels.
