Energy Crisis : Jirama struggles to ensure electricity distribution

Businesses and companies endure repeated outages

For several weeks, Antananarivo and its surrounding areas have been facing power outages that are affecting all sectors of activity. Jirama is struggling to maintain a steady electricity supply, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among users.

Power outages have become frequent, caused by a combination of technical difficulties and shortages. The significant decrease in water levels at hydroelectric dams, coupled with issues in the supply of heavy fuel oil, has led to a considerable reduction in electricity production capacity. As a result, the interconnected network of Antananarivo (RIA) is constantly being disrupted, both day and night.

Jirama reported a « total voltage failure » following the interruption of two power lines from Andekaleka, without providing details on the causes of these issues. The public company states that its technical teams are working to gradually restore service. In recent days, the Ambodivona substation was also affected by an outage due to a high-voltage cable break, leaving several neighborhoods without power for several hours.

The Ambohimanambola-Ambodivona line remains unstable despite repair attempts, while two other lines from Andekaleka have also failed. This electrical crisis has impacted the water supply, with power outages jeopardizing an already fragile distribution system, plunging the capital into a critical situation. The paralysis of economic and daily activities raises concerns about Jirama’s ability to manage this crisis effectively. While the public eagerly awaits a return to normalcy, without a long-term solution, the risk of continued outages looms large over the city.
