Comoros: Stabilizing energy supply

Acquisition of generators to meet energy challenges

Comoros is facing difficulties in electricity supply. The reduction in the capacity of thermal power stations from 18 MW to 9 MW at the beginning of the year affects energy distribution.

To remedy this situation, Soilahoudine Moumini, the new Director General of SONELEC, is launching the acquisition of new generators. The public, while recognizing the efforts, is calling for a more thoughtful approach. These purchases are intended to address the energy emergency, but they are not sufficient to resolve the crisis completely. Moreover, many are calling for a shift to renewable energy and more effective management to improve the sector sustainably.

Since 2017, more than 20 billion Comorian francs (41,987 USD at constant exchange rates) have been allocated for the acquisition of generators. Despite these efforts, electricity supply remains volatile, raising questions about value for money and equipment maintenance. Although nearly 20 generators were acquired between 2017 and 2025, the expected improvement is still not yet achieved. The maintenance of equipment is also a major challenge for the Comorian authorities.
