Mauritius – Japan: Knowledge and innovation

Opportunity for Mauritian students and teachers

Training opportunities in Japan for Mauritian students and teachers were at the center of discussions between Education Minister Mahend Gungapersad and Ambassador Mashiro Kan of Japan during a meeting on February 17.

Both sides discussed the possibility of short-term fellowships. These scholarships will allow recipients to learn about Japanese best practices. The Minister stressed that « beneficiaries will be able to discover Japan’s fundamental values, such as discipline and respect ». Officers will also have the opportunity to learn the concept of Kaizen. Indeed, Kaizen is a philosophy of continuous improvement that is widely adopted by Japanese companies. This approach could enrich the management of the Mauritian education system.

The Ambassador also reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening its cooperation with Mauritius in various areas. More specifically, these areas include education, culture and sport. Moreover, Kan said, « We discussed the establishment of exchange programs between students from the two countries ».

The possibility of translating Japanese literary works was also discussed. This initiative will make it possible to introduce these works to the Mauritian public. « Japan is a model for development and innovation », the Minister concluded.
