Empowering children from vulnerable families
On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, inaugurated the Oasis-de-Paix Pedagogical and Professional Training Center in Pointe aux Sables.
Formerly an NGO known as Oasis-de-Paix – École père Henri Souchon, this center now focuses on educating and providing professional training to children from vulnerable families, aiming to enhance their stability and future success in combating social inequalities. In her opening remarks, Minister Dookun-Luchoomun highlighted the Ministry of Education’s comprehensive reform, which ensures access to quality basic education for every child.
Through a partnership with Oasis-de-Paix, the program enables students to complete NCE 1, NCE 2, and NCE 3 levels before entering apprenticeships in companies or factories. The initiative also aims to integrate students into the workforce by offering them an allowance and a clear path to employment. The reform emphasizes the holistic development of students, addressing both academic and social needs through early intervention programs and additional resources provided by NGOs. Integrated NCE levels and professional training courses, particularly in technical fields, prepare students for diverse careers.
In her conclusion, the Minister underscored the importance of collaboration between the State, NGOs, and educational institutions in providing each child with the necessary support to develop their skills and contribute effectively to society.
