Workshop on Comoros’ Accession to the WTO

Raising awareness among national stakeholders

The Ministry of Economy clarified that this workshop is part of the integration process for Comoros into the WTO, aiming to raise awareness among economic stakeholders as part of following up on commitments made during pre-accession negotiations.

President Azali Assoumani participated in the inaugural meeting on Comoros’ accession to the World Trade Organization, held on Monday, November 4, at the Palais du Peuple. Economic stakeholders are rallying to develop a post-accession strategy for the nation’s integration into this global organization.

This meeting, led by the Ministry of Economy and overseen by the Head of State, is a response to participants’ requests to review commitments and necessary reforms for the post-accession period, as well as to explore potential opportunities for advancement. The agreement, signed by President Azali Assoumani on February 26, 2024, in Abu Dhabi, officially positioned the Union of Comoros as the 165th member of the WTO. This workshop targets the private sector, public administration, and civil society organizations to solidify Comoros’ commitment to the WTO.

On the sidelines of the workshop, the president of the Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, and Handicrafts (Uccia) expressed his enthusiasm for this first meeting organized by the Ministry of Economy. He noted that it aims to inform and engage various national stakeholders on the country’s entry into the WTO. « This involves presenting us with an actionable plan, which includes upholding commitments through a signed agreement, creating and implementing regulations and laws to promote domestic and international trade », he stated.
