Cooperatives and Empowerment: Mauritian Women Showcase Their Expertise

On April 14, 2025, a mini-exhibition of local products was held at the headquarters of the National Women Entrepreneurs Council in Phoenix.

Organized by the Mauritius Women Entrepreneurs Cooperative Federation (MWECF), the event highlighted a rich diversity of food products, clothing, accessories, and plants, the fruit of local entrepreneurial talent.

As part of the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives and International Women’s Day, this initiative is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of Industry, SMEs, and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare.

In her speech, Minister Arianne Navarre-Marie praised the unifying role of cooperatives, highlighting their contribution to social cohesion and economic development. “My ministry is also committed to supporting the community, particularly economic stakeholders, in their personal development, empowerment, and independence,” she stated.

The Minister also noted that many people remain in difficult marital situations due to financial dependence. Economic independence, she believes, is key to breaking this cycle.

Conscious of a more inclusive vision, Navarre-Marie encouraged a rethinking of the Council’s objectives, incorporating training focused on the environment and recycling. The Minister also announced the upcoming establishment of agricultural spaces within community centers, with the aim of promoting agriculture as a source of sustainable income.
