Giving new impetus to bilateral cooperation

His Excellency Michael Häusler, the German Ambassador to Mauritius, who is based in Antananarivo, pays a courtesy visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade, the Honorable Maneesh Gobin, on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the Ministry.

During their meeting, the two representatives reaffirm their commitment to strengthening ties between Mauritius and Germany, aiming to invigorate bilateral cooperation as well as collaboration within the framework of the robust partnership with the European Union.

Both countries are exploring new avenues of cooperation in various sectors, including renewable energies, artificial intelligence, the ocean economy, and the pharmaceutical industry. Mauritius and Germany also enjoy thriving economic and people-to-people relations, with Germany standing as one of Mauritius’s primary tourist markets, welcoming approximately 118,500 German visitors in 2023. Efforts are underway by both the government and the private sector to further increase the number of German tourists in 2024 and beyond.

Discussions during the meeting also center on maritime security concerns, such as drug trafficking in the region, and the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean. The Minister reaffirms Mauritius’ commitment to leading collaborative efforts in addressing these challenges. In line with this commitment, Mauritius is set to host the inaugural Ministerial Conference on Drug Trafficking and Substance Abuse in the Western Indian Ocean on April 25, 2024. The conference aims to convene regional countries and international partners to devise a collective response to these pressing issues and enhance security in the region.
