Madagascar launches its economic data portal
On February 4, 2025, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched a new digital tool. This site is designed to provide data for decision-making in public policy and investments.
The MEF, with the support of the UNDP, inaugurated the Economic and Social Portal of Madagascar (PortES). This portal centralizes a wide range of socio-economic data and offers a clear view of the country’s economy, allowing users to access reliable and up-to-date information easily.
The platform is divided into six sections: national economy, regional economy, program indicators, public development aid, framework documents, and studies and research. These sections aim to facilitate access to information for public, private, academic, and civil society actors, thereby allowing for a better understanding of economic dynamics at the national and regional levels.
One of its strengths lies in its ability to centralize and update data. This allows users to access relevant information on macroeconomic accounts, financial support received, and the evolution of sectoral development strategies. According to the Secretary-General of the MEF, Ramanampanoharana Andry, « the portal will serve as a reference site for data collection and research, thus avoiding trips to various institutions ». This site therefore facilitates research and analysis work.
The platform is also valuable for national and international investors who can rely on the available data to guide their investment decisions. PortES promotes transparency and good governance for both public administration and citizens and represents an essential source of information for all stakeholders in the country’s economic development.
The UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Jean-François Dubuisson, praised this initiative. He emphasized its key role in promoting democratic debate and transparency in public management. However, he mentioned the technical challenges related to data collection, centralization, and dissemination. This is why the organization continues to support Madagascar in these complex efforts.
