Economic freedom in Africa : Mauritius holds the first position

Mauritius maintains its position, Madagascar drops 6 Places

With an economic freedom score of 71.5, Mauritius ranks first in Africa among the freest economies, according to the 2024 Economic Freedom Index. Critical evaluation criteria include the rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency, and market openness.

Mauritius’ leading position in Africa reflects a notable increase of 0.9 points compared to the previous year. Globally, Mauritius ranks 19th, while Madagascar stands at 97th in the 2024 Economic Freedom Index. With a cumulative score of 57.3 out of 100, the Big Island drops 6 places from the previous ranking.

Singapore, Switzerland, Ireland, and Luxembourg make up the Top 10. In comparison, the United Arab Emirates ranks 20th in this index, the United States 25th, England 30th, Japan 38th, and France 62nd.

The 2024 index, which considers the policies and economic conditions of 184 sovereign countries between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, reveals a global economy that, overall, is not free. Unfortunately, the global average economic freedom score has decreased further than the previous year (59.3) and has never been as low as 58.6 since 2001.
