On-site assessment before decisive legislation
The President of the Law Commission in the National Assembly, Sacha Houlié, and the Vice-President of the National Assembly, Elodie Jacquier-Laforge, plan a 5-day visit to Mayotte starting on March 20, 2024.
The visit of these high-ranking officials from the National Assembly is of significant importance to the department of Mayotte. It comes in the wake of statements by the Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories, Gérald Darmanin, regarding the removal of birthright citizenship in Mayotte. This announcement has sparked strong reactions and calls for a thorough assessment of the situation on the ground.
One of the primary objectives of this trip is to ensure a comprehensive and informed approach to the local situation before any legislative steps concerning Mayotte are taken. In this regard, Mahoran deputies Mansour Kamardine and Estelle Youssouffa are collaborating to organize this visit.
During their stay, these members of the National Assembly will visit several key sites. These include the Cavani migrant camp, the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM), and its maternity ward, as well as the Administrative Detention Center (CRA) in Pamandzi. The deputies will also assess the adaptation of local infrastructure to demographic pressure, such as water ramps and schools.
