Encouraging the development of trade and investment
On Friday, June 21, 2024, Mrs. Mary Chirwa, Zambia’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Mauritius, made a courtesy visit to Maneesh Gobin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade.
On the same day, Mrs. Chirwa submitted her letters of credence to President Prithvirajsing Roopun. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1974, Mauritius and Zambia have enjoyed strong bilateral relations. Their collaboration spans bilateral, regional, continental, and international levels.
Both countries are members of the African Union, COMESA, and SADC, and benefit from trade privileges under AGOA. These connections have boosted trade and development potential, especially within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Mauritius’s textile and clothing sector imports large quantities from Zambia to produce goods for European and American markets. Minister Gobin hopes to extend this successful model to agriculture and agricultural processing to enhance regional food security and promote African trade and investment.
Additionally, Mrs. Chirwa emphasized the need for increased interaction between companies in both countries to foster trade and investment development.
