Mauritius – Seychelles : Twinning agreement between two cities

Promoting commercial activities

On May 28, 2024, a new twinning agreement was signed between the district of Anse Boileau in Seychelles and Black River in Mauritius, extending their collaboration into its third decade.

The Minister of Community Affairs of the Seychelles, Rose-Marie Hoareau, and Lydia Charlie, the Acting Mayor of Victoria, signed the agreement. On the Mauritian side, Veenabye Jeewajee, President of the Black River District Council, signed the agreement.

The first twinning agreement between Anse Boileau and Black River was signed in February 2004. This initiative aims to create beneficial links for the populations of both regions and promote educational, cultural, sports activities, and commercial exchanges.

After the signing, Jeewajee expressed his honor in signing the agreement and his desire to continue the relationship with the district of Anse Boileau. Charlie stated, « Every time a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) is signed between cities and districts, I am aware that I am participating in an initiative aimed at building bridges and eliminating barriers between countries ».

Several similar agreements have been signed between districts of the Seychelles and Mauritius. The municipal council of Beau Bassin/Rose Hill is twinned with the district of Mont Buxton and the municipal council of Vacoas/Phoenix with the district of Plaisance. Other districts that have formed such agreements include Moka and Pointe Larue, Savanne and Port Glaud, Pamplemousses and Grand Anse Praslin, Rivière du Rempart and Beau Vallon, and Flacq and a corresponding district in the Seychelles.
