Major agreements on the sidelines of COP 28

Partnerships signed between the Comoros and the United Arab Emirates

During COP 28, Comoros entered into agreements with the United Arab Emirates. Nour El Fath Azali, a private advisor and son of the Comorian president, disclosed the upcoming arrival of Emirates Airlines in the archipelago.

On December 3, 2023, Nour El-Fath Azali, son of President Azali Assoumani, announced that Emirates Airlines would soon be expanding its services to Comoros. This commitment was officially formalized during COP 28, the global climate summit held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12. The aviation agreement with Emirates Airlines aims to increase the annual transport capacity from 150,000 to 500,000 passengers. Apart from this agreement, other partnerships were established, including the takeover of the prestigious Golden Tulip hotel in Moroni and the expansion of the Prince Saïd Ibrahim International Airport.

However, the private advisor remains vague about the details and timeline of these aviation agreements. Despite the lack of specifics, this collaboration marks a critical step in the closer relationship between Comoros and the United Arab Emirates. This progress follows the continuity of the Comorian president’s visit to Abu Dhabi at the end of September. During his three-day visit, the Comorian president and his Emirati counterpart signed cooperation protocols covering key sectors such as education, health, diplomacy, and tourism.

As a reminder, the Comorian government attaches particular importance to climate and energy issues. The archipelago is yet to determine how it will reconcile its plans for expanding air transport. This poses a complex task as it navigates the intersection of these plans with its convictions regarding sustainability and climate transition.
