Honorary consuls to promote Madagascar abroad

Boosting investment and tourism

Madagascar’s honorary consuls have been tasked with a crucial role in promoting the country through economic diplomacy. This directive was outlined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rafaravavitafika Rasata, during an online meeting on Friday.

The Minister emphasized the importance of consuls actively promoting Madagascar as an attractive destination for foreign investors, highlighting the country’s vast economic opportunities. In particular, the consuls were reminded of their responsibility to enhance Madagascar’s visibility by attracting both investors and tourists.

The ministry outlined a clear goal: to foster economic exchanges and increase the country’s presence on the international stage. This meeting was organized to reinforce Malagasy diplomacy’s mission of defending national interests abroad. Beyond economic diplomacy, the consuls were also encouraged to seek scholarships for Malagasy students, further broadening their diplomatic responsibilities.

As Madagascar awaits the official appointment of ambassadors in certain countries, honorary consuls who are unpaid, non-governmental representatives are being relied on to fill the gap. In addition to their role in economic promotion, these consuls manage essential consular tasks such as « protecting Malagasy citizens » and « handling various formalities and administrative documents », according to the Honorary Consulate of Madagascar in Lyon.
