Enhanced bilateral cooperation between Japan and Seychelles

On the occasion of the 64th birthday of Emperor Naruhito of Japan, the Japanese Embassy hosted a reception at the Savoy Seychelles Resort & Spa. Emperor Naruhito, a symbol of Japan’s unity and traditions, celebrated his birthday on February 23, surrounded by dignitaries and guests.

In his speech, Ambassador Ken Okaniwa highlighted the significance of 2024 for the relations between Japan and Seychelles. This year marks the Japanese government’s appointment of the first extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Seychelles.

Ambassador Okaniwa underscored the strong bilateral ties between the two nations, spanning 48 years and rooted in mutual respect and shared values such as democracy and the rule of law. Seychelles is vital in promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), advocating for regional maritime security and connectivity.

Japan’s cooperation with Seychelles includes providing patrol vessels and training to the Seychelles coast guard. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) training squadron plans a second stopover in Victoria, emphasizing Seychelles’ importance for regional maritime security.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Sylvestre Radegonde expressed Seychelles’ gratitude for Japan’s technological advancements and ongoing contributions. Japan’s support aligns with Seychelles’ blue economy vision, fostering mutual prosperity and sustainable development.

The reception, attended by President Wavel Ramkalawan, First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, Vice President Ahmed Afif, and other dignitaries, reaffirmed Japan’s friendship with Seychelles. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in June 1976, with the opening of Japan’s first embassy in Seychelles in November 2019.
