State Aid for Sugar Cane Farmers
Sugar cane farmers benefit from an annual government subsidy called « Aid to sugar cane production ». These funds are used to compensate for income losses due to production difficulties on the island of Réunion.
In October 2023, the State decided to create a fund of 10 million EUR to help exporters overcome economic difficulties. Indeed, after a below-normal 2023 campaign, the economic conditions in the sugarcane sector were particularly difficult.
On February 6, 2024, 2,115 cane growers received 15 million EUR under the tripartite agreement between the industry, growers and the government. An additional 13 million EUR will be paid to these growers in mid-February. This financial support is intended in particular to help growers cope with rising input costs.
