Launch of a Tea Plantation Project in Valletta
On March 19, 2025, in Valletta, the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr. Arvin Boolell, launched a tea plantation project led by the ENL Group.
The event, attended by several political figures, emphasized collaboration between the public and private sectors. The objective is to boost local agriculture and create economic opportunities for smallholder farmers.
The project, which benefits from Kenyan expertise, aims to harness the potential of Valletta’s acidic and humid soils, which are ideal for growing tea. The Minister welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector to increase local production. In his speech, Boolell also emphasized the need to modernize skills and improve infrastructure to support this strategic sector.
The ENL Group, in collaboration with the government, has taken concrete measures to support small tea growers. ENL Managing Director Gilbert Espitalier-Noël stated that the group will provide tea plants and help growers mechanize harvesting, thus facilitating access to modern techniques and improving production. The project, which covers an area of over 500 acres, will also benefit from the contribution of a Ugandan team, invited to Mauritius to share its expertise and build local capacity.
