Strengthening the region’s production capacity
Honey producers in Nosy Be are optimistic as they benefit from a new honey processing facility designed to produce high-quality natural honey.
Honey production in Nosy Be has commenced with the inauguration of a new facility on July 19 by local authorities and the General Directorate of the Ministry of Industrialization. This unit aims to « produce high-quality honey, meeting standards and performing well in both domestic and international markets » according to the Ministry of Industrialization and Commerce.
This facility is part of the Ministry of Industrialization and Commerce’s One District, One Factory (ODOF) project, which seeks to enhance the production capabilities of various regions. The honey sector in Diana, the area encompassing Nosy Be, is seen as advantageous and lucrative, with over five hundred honey producers grouped into six cooperatives.
The company Distrimax has been selected to manage the facility, leveraging its extensive experience in the field. Distrimax will collaborate with the cooperatives to ensure a steady supply of raw materials. The honey industry represents a promising new venture for Nosy Be, traditionally known for its tourism assets. On average, Nosy Be produces five tons of honey per year, though the local demand is approximately twenty tons.
