Modernization of livestock farming: The private sector gets involved

Technological solutions to improve productivity

Livestock monitoring and management are among the Malagasy government’s priorities, in accordance with the directives of President Andry Rajoelina.

To strengthen this management, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is launching a project in the districts of Ampanihy and Betioky, in the southwest region of Madagascar. This project, which involves 20,000 sheep and goats, involves installing “pre-printed electronic tags” and riders to track the animals’ movements.

This initiative is part of the DEFIS program, funded by IFAD, to improve animal monitoring and health. By using these technologies, livestock farmers will be able to better manage their livestock, integrating professional standards that facilitate access to local and international markets.

One of the project’s major objectives is to strengthen collaboration with the private sector and enable livestock farmers to more easily access business opportunities. In addition, local veterinary support is being provided to ensure animal health. This support includes vaccinations, parasite treatments, and vitamin distribution to maintain good physical condition.

Overall, this project is expected to improve the productivity and sustainability of Madagascar’s livestock sector, while opening up new opportunities for livestock farmers, both nationally and internationally.
