Agricultural Show 2025: Mayotte Promotes Its Agricultural Products

From February 22 to March 2, 2025, Mayotte participated in the Salon International de l’Agriculture at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, an event for agricultural professionals from around the world. Despite the consequences of Cyclone Chido, which ravaged part of the harvest, the island exhibited its agricultural products, including quality vanilla.

Vanilla production in Mayotte is mainly intended for local markets. A representative of the region emphasizes: « We are looking to improve quality, because it generates more added value. If we succeed in achieving a better quality, we could sell our products locally, without having to export them ». This quest for quality is essential for producers.

Mohamedi Ahmada, a Mahoran producer who won several silver medals at the Concours Général Agricole, explains that « it is the sun that plays a key role in the transformation, making vanilla more fragrant and effective ». Production and processing are done directly on the island, a process that begins with the harvest.

Before Cyclone Chido, the region produced about 1 ton of black vanilla each year. However, the storm affected the crop and it will take three years to harvest new pods. Despite this challenge, the island remains determined to restart its production.

The show allowed Mayotte industry players to meet international producers, offer tastings and participate in demonstrations on agricultural innovations. Although faced with difficulties, the region continues to promote the quality of its agricultural products, hoping for a more prosperous future after the cyclone.
