Towards Food Self-Sufficiency
On March 27, 2025, an inter-ministerial meeting was held at the Port-Louis Town Hall under the chairmanship of Arvin Boolell, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security. The objective was to address the challenges faced by the pig farming sector in Mauritius.
In the presence of representatives from the Ministries of Local Government and Finance, this meeting aimed to explore solutions to improve the situation of farmers and strengthen local production. Michaël Marguerite, President of the Mauritius Pig Marketing Cooperative Federation, welcomed this meeting as a first step towards improvements, while emphasizing that the results remain to be confirmed.
Pig farmers continue to face significant challenges, notably the rising cost of animal feed, which is making pig farming increasingly unprofitable. In this context, the breeders’ federation has put forward several proposals to improve the situation, such as the reopening of the animal feed processing plant in Richelieu, the introduction of new breeds of pigs, and the control of meat prices by the Mauritius Meat Authority. The farmers hope that these initiatives will support the sector in the long term and contribute to the country’s food self-sufficiency.
