Garance: The Reunion fruit industry needs to be rebuilt

Between Reconstruction and Diversification

Cyclone Garance, which struck Réunion Island nearly a month ago, affected the island’s fruit industry. Producers are now facing economic challenges and reevaluating their farming practices.

Orchards, particularly those of lychee, passion fruit, and pineapple, suffered significant damage, with winds exceeding 230 km/h. Much of the crop was destroyed, and only a few trees survived. Producers estimate that it will be several years before a significant harvest is possible. In the meantime, they are considering diversifying their crops to limit the economic impact of this natural disaster.

Passion fruit production, an important export crop, was also severely affected. The total loss of this harvest disrupted supply to the local market, and exports are likely to be affected for several months.

Pineapple exporters are reporting losses representing approximately one-third of their annual turnover. Faced with this situation, some companies are considering measures such as temporary layoffs to limit the economic consequences. The fruit industry in Réunion is in a phase of reconstruction, with challenges to overcome to ensure the future of this key production for the island.
