Food Self-Sufficiency : Thousands of Chicks Provided to Farmers

Reducing dependency on poultry imports

The goal of this initiative is to promote local production and reduce reliance on poultry imports as part of an urgent project to support agricultural output.

Led by Secretary General Abdoul-Kader Saandia from the Ministry of Agriculture, 49 poultry farmers on the island of Ngazidja including 39 men and 10 women received 15,000 chicks. In total, 160,000 chicks are being distributed across Ngazidja, Ndzuani, and Mwali. This effort is part of the Agricultural Production Support Emergency Project (Aefpf), a government initiative aimed at bolstering local agricultural production and reducing reliance on poultry imports.

A formal ceremony marked this distribution, attended by Naguib Mohamed, the project coordinator. This project aims to improve food security while offering support to key players in the agricultural sector. Ultimately, over 160,000 chicks will be distributed across the three islands, benefiting various elements of the supply chain, including seed producers, agricultural farmers, and suppliers of animal feed and agricultural inputs.

Before distributing the chicks, the project coordinator encouraged farmers to step up their efforts to achieve positive results in the coming months. This initiative represents a significant step toward meeting sustainable development goals by fostering stronger agricultural production and ensuring stable incomes for local producers. The coordinator also highlighted that this project is part of a broader vision to enhance agricultural skills and capacity.
