Promotion of Madagascar’s organic agriculture sector
This Monday, March 11, a workshop was held at Anosy to review Madagascar’s participation at the Biofach trade fair held in Nuremberg, Germany, from February 13 to 16, 2024.
The workshop provided a platform to assess Madagascar’s engagement at Biofach 2024, which revolved around the theme « Food for the future: women’s impact on sustainable food systems. » Madagascar was represented at the event by a delegation comprising nine companies from the organic sector, specializing in products such as vanilla, essential oils, spices, cocoa, and medicinal plants. Among the participating companies were Floramad, MG Sakay, UCLS, Sahanala, APLV, Ferme Mahasoa, Phael Flor, and Tsaravokatra Vanilla Import. These entities received support from MINAE, EDBM, FCCIM, as well as the PIC/World Bank, PRADA/GIZ, and CCPS/GIZ projects. Leading the delegation was Suzelin Ratohiarijaona, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock.
According to the workshop’s findings, the mission aimed to advance the organic agriculture sector by showcasing regulatory advancements, fostering exchanges with technical and commercial partners, and expanding market opportunities, both organic and conventional, while also attracting investments to Madagascar.
The mission proved to be a triumph for the Malagasy delegation, as it facilitated numerous fruitful meetings. These included discussions between the Minister and the President of IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements), representatives of COLEAD (Network Committee for Entrepreneurship, Agriculture and Development), the IPD (Importation Promotion Desk) team, the project manager of the Knowledge Hub for Organic Agriculture in Eastern Africa (KHEA), and the Ugandan Minister of Agriculture.
